Understanding the Electronic Logging Device

The rules of the roads are changing this year in the name of preventing emergencies. 2018 marks the mandatory incorporation of the electronic logging device (ELD) into the professional lives of Florida truck drivers with the intent of improving safety on the roads. For those that work in intermodal drayage, this new piece of technology has a significant impact, along with regulations to adhere to. Here’s what you need to know...

So, what exactly is an ELD?

According to FLHSMV, “The electronic logging device (ELD) rule is intended to help create a safer work environment for drivers, and make it easier and faster to accurately track, manage, and share records of duty status (RODS) data.” In order to do this, an ELD possesses the ability to record driving time by synchronizing with the vehicle’s engine, therefore providing accurate information on hours of service.

Do I really have to install one?

YEP. You do. As of December 18,2017, having an ELD in your truck is required by law and is actively being enforced the highway by the highway patrol. This is mandatory for all commercial drivers operating on Florida roads.

How does an ELD work?

As stated above, the ELD must connect to a vehicle’s engine in order to record hours. Drivers should be able to login each day and input whether they are on or off duty, as well as driving segments. The ELD should be able to provide data quickly in a standardized format, making it easy for drivers to share hours with law enforcement if prompted.

It’s important to be well prepared when on the road, and understanding the intricacies of the ELD is a good way to avoid any penalties while keeping track of your hours. There are several fleet management systems out on the market, just be sure to check that they meet all requirements. For more information, click here.
