4 Clever Ways to Find the Best Freight Loads

Keen to find the most lucrative loads to haul, but don’t know where in the world to start? We’ve got your back! These 4 tried and true methods might be your answer to upping your OTR game.

1. Think Long Term, Not Short Term

It all starts with knowing who your ideal client is. This makes it easier to pick and choose the best matches for you, with clients whose business ideals align with yours.

This is also a great way to form long-lasting business relationships. Once you partner with a client that you enjoyed working with, don’t think the job is done- offer your services so the business keeps flowing down the road.

If you’re not sure who your ideal client is, try asking yourself these questions…

  • How much do you want to get paid and do they pay on time?
  • Do they have testimonials and a proven track record?
  • How often do they hand out loads? If it’s frequently, you might be able to work with them in the future.
  • Do they use the lanes you prefer?

2. Load Boards Aren’t the Only Place to Find Work

If you’re new on the owner operator scene, then load boards are a great tool to help you get started with networking. But as time goes by, you’re going to want to branch out to find more lucrative gigs.

Load boards often times feature low-paying jobs and it can get competitive and frustrating trying to secure a steady flow.

Instead, you can try the following...

3. Find Hidden Gems with Industry Associations & Local Chapters

The good stuff doesn’t just appear in front of you, sometimes you have to think outside the box.

One way to seek out lucrative loads is to look at industries that are more under the radar but need trucking services. One of the benefits of working in the trucking industry is that it is literally the backbone of our economy, so if products need to move, it’s up to truckers!

And, the majority of American industries need transportation services. From retail to luxury cars and even government contracts, there’s plenty of work to be had.

The key is to stay away from the most popular industries that many truckers go for, and instead approach a diverse array of industry associations.

Not only do you get the chance to find lucrative loads, but you might even get your foot in the door hauling products in an industry that you like.

4. The US Government Needs to move Freight, Too!

For steady work and pay, you can haul loads for the US government. From military equipment to mail, the possibilities (and loads) are endless.

If this is of interest to you, you may need to get some special clearances, as government loads can be difficult to land, but stay vigilant, go through the process, and you’ll be rewarded with a top-tier client.
