Summer Trucking Safety: 7 Hazards Drivers Should Watch For

Summer might seem like the perfect season for trucking—no icy roads, no snowstorms, and longer daylight hours. But warmer weather comes with its own set of challenges that every truck driver needs to be aware of.

From extreme heat to unpredictable traffic, here are 7 summer hazards that can impact safety on the road.

1. Tire Blowouts from Hot Pavement

High temperatures can cause tire pressure to rise rapidly, increasing the risk of blowouts—especially if tires are already worn or underinflated. Be sure to check tire pressure regularly, including your spare. Heat expands air, so what’s “just right” in the morning could be dangerously high by afternoon.

2. Engine Overheating

Your truck works hard, and the engine works even harder in the summer. Keep a close eye on coolant levels, radiator condition, and belts. Overheating doesn’t just cause delays—it can lead to serious mechanical damage if ignored.

3. Dehydration and Heat Exhaustion

Long hours in a hot cab can wear you down more than you realize. Stay hydrated throughout the day, wear light, breathable clothing, and take breaks in shaded or air-conditioned spots when possible. Symptoms like dizziness, fatigue, or headaches should never be ignored.

4. Increased Road Construction

Summer is peak construction season, and that means unexpected detours, narrowed lanes, and slower speeds. Stay alert for signage, follow posted speed limits in work zones, and allow extra time in your delivery schedule.

5. Glare and Reduced Visibility

Bright sun, especially during sunrise and sunset, can seriously reduce visibility. Keep sunglasses within reach and make sure your windshield is clean, inside and out. Glare-reducing visors can also help on long daytime drives.

6. Tourist and Holiday Traffic

With families on vacation and holiday weekends in full swing, traffic can get congested and unpredictable. Practice defensive driving and allow extra following distance—especially in unfamiliar areas or small towns with limited truck routes.

7. Sudden Summer Storms

Thunderstorms, heavy rain, and flash floods can develop quickly. Always check the forecast before hitting the road and have a plan if you need to pull over. Reduced traction and visibility are real dangers during these fast-moving systems.
