Eco-Friendly Packaging Hacks That Will Cut Down Your Shipping Carbon Footprint

It’s a green new day, as logistics companies far and wide implement more sustainable shipping practices that help reduce the carbon footprint the industry leaves behind.

In fact, the EPA estimates that over 50% of carbon emissions come from the transportation sector in the US alone, so there is definitely room for improvement.

Do you want to make your supply chain a little bit greener? The good news is, you don’t have to jump through hoops to make it happen.

One area where you can be more mindful and save some pennies while you’re at it, is by focusing on how to package goods for shipping.

In this post, I’ll highlight a few simple and fast ways you can choose the best eco friendly packaging choices.

Switch your materials

In 2021 we are all aware of the devastating effects plastics have on the planet. It’s given rise to numerous manufacturing companies offering sustainable materials that are biodegradable, or can be recycled.

You can make a difference by a simple switch. Look for packaging supplies made from materials like…

  • Biodegradable air peanuts instead of Styrofoam
  • Upcycled corrugated cardboard instead of plastic bubble wrap
  • Air pillows instead of bubble wrap
  • Cornstarch-based packaging instead of petroleum-based packaging
  • Compostable mailers

Recycle your pallets

The wooden pallet is a simple design that has transformed how we ship goods by making it easier to consolidate space and organize products. But, how many pallets do you see tossed to the side of the road?

Pallet waste is an easy fix when you join a pallet recycle program like Millwood. You can get involved by only using recycled pallets, then donating them to companies like Millwood when you no longer need them.

They will take pallets even if they are broken, then they will fix them up for shippers to reuse. Or if they’re too far gone, they’ll repurpose the wood into mulch or animal bedding.

Be smart with your boxes

Boxes usually don’t get a second thought. But if you’re looking for cheap, easy ways to be more sustainable, then go ahead- be choosy with your boxes.

Take the time to ensure you're using the right-sized boxes for your freight. Not only does this save on material waste, but it’s a space saver that requires less energy output.

As well, you get a little savings bonus. By using the right-sized boxes, you don’t have to pay extra dimensional fees for unused box space.
