Spring Dangers Truck Drivers Need to Know About

Springtime might be fresh and flowery as we all get excited to wave goodbye to the cold, harsh winter, but life on the road can still be perilous with the changing seasons.

Don’t be fooled by the gaiety of spring. There are still dangerous conditions that truck drivers need to keep in mind when hitting the road.

In this blog post, we share the most common dangers to be aware of.

Mechanical Issues

Winter can be hard on your truck, which is why it’s absolutely necessary to undertake a thorough inspection before your next big trip. Have the essentials checked, including the brakes, tires, engine, turn signals, and windshield wipers.

You’ll also want to check that there is no moisture trapped in the windows and mirrors.

Spring’s Fickle Weather

All because it’s spring doesn’t mean the cold isn’t over yet- it just means it’s more unpredictable. The weather can change rapidly during spring, one warm day can lead into a chilly one, where rain turns to snow and ice.

You’ll want to be wary of black ice, especially in shaded areas near bridges and overpasses where it’s difficult to see.

It’s a good idea to download a weather app you like, and keep a close eye on the forecast as you travel.

Battling the Wind

Spring time is known for windy weather, which can be dangerous for towering tractor trailers moving on the highway.

If you experience strong wind gusts, it’s best to slow down, as it can get more difficult to control your rig. If it gets exceptionally gusty, don’t chance it- pull over to the side and wait for the wind to subside.

Animals on the Road

Remember the movie Bambi and how all of the animals awakened after their long winter slumber with a burst of energy and excitement?

Spring time is when animals are becoming more active, and looking for mates. You’ll want to watch out when driving in the early morning or evenings, especially in wooded areas. Deer grazing on the side of the road can easily spook, or if they try to cross, it can cause a major accident.

Be attentive of your surroundings and take note of animal crossing signs.
