A sprinter van drives fast on a road

The 101 on Short Division Trucking

In the logistics industry there are several different services that require drivers, each with varying responsibilities.

For example, if you’re interested in truck driver jobs, but are a little weary about spending hours on the road hauling for long distances, then you do have another option: short haul trucking.

Short haul truckers get the stability of familiar routes and stay either regional or local, which generally allows for more time at home.

If short hauling sounds right up your alley, read on to learn more!

What is Short Haul Trucking?

Short haul trucking is defined by the shorter travel distance (regionally or locally) to ship goods via van or truck, typically within a 150-250 mile radius. This differs from long haul trucking, where goods are transported within a much larger radius over 250 miles.

What Are the Benefits of Short Haul Trucking?

Short haul trucking offers many benefits since drivers aren’t on the road for weeks at a time like OTR drivers.

For one, short haulers get more time at home. Granted, the days are long, but since short haul is regional or local, drivers typically get to go home at the end of the day and sleep in their own beds.

This means that home and work time are more balanced, which is enticing if you have a family or pets.

You also get the benefit or road familiarity. Typically, short haulers drive the same routes daily, unlike OTR drivers who are on new highways every day, across the country.

Since you know the roads, there is less stress with deciding the most efficient way to go, especially in lieu of traffic or weather delays.

Short Haul Trucking Challenges

Of course, short haul trucking isn’t for everyone. With short haul, there’s no room for error and time is of the essence. Drivers are usually handling the final leg of a shipment, so making multiple deliveries safely and on time is a priority to ensure customer satisfaction.

Days can be stressful, but if you want to stay close to home then this could be the best fit for a you as a truck driver.
